About Greenport
Greenport was first settled in 1682; the village was incorporated in 1838. As its dozens of classically beautiful historic homes attest, Greenport was then a major whaling and shipbuilding center. In 1844, it became the eastern terminus of the North Fork branch of the Long Island Railroad – Commodore Vanderbilt himself made the first passenger run. Today, the North Fork’s excellent wineries and farm-to-table cuisine have helped make Greenport the delightful destination it is: a relaxed yet sophisticated weekend and vacation spot whose “season” just seems to start earlier (with the first buds of spring) and end later (when the whole world comes for pumpkins) with each passing year.
